Albertus MT Regular

Designed by the renowned German-born calligrapher and designer Berthold Wolpe for the Monotype Corporation between 1932 and 1940, Albertus was named in honor of the 13th-century philosopher and scientist Albertus Magnus. The typeface's origins are deeply rooted in Wolpe’s background as a metalworker and stone carver; he originally hand-cut the characters in bronze. This 'incised' or glyphic approach distinguishes Albertus from traditional calligraphic serifs, resulting in a design that feels carved rather than drawn, which solidified its place as a cornerstone of 20th-century British graphic identity.

From a technical standpoint, Albertus MT Regular is defined by its flared terminals and remarkably sturdy visual weight, which avoids the fragility of hair-line serifs. The font features a relatively modest x-height paired with wide, open counters, ensuring high legibility even in challenging display environments.
