American Typewriter Condensed Light

American Typewriter Condensed Light was originally created in 1974 by Joel Kaden and Tony Stan for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC). The font was designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the invention of the typewriter, effectively bridging the gap between the mechanical limitations of early monospaced fonts and the refined requirements of modern proportional typesetting. It maintains the distinct slab serifs and softened terminals that evoke a nostalgic, journalistic feel while offering improved legibility.

The Condensed Light variant specifically addresses the need for space-efficient layouts while maintaining a delicate and sophisticated appearance. By narrowing the character widths and reducing the stroke weight, this weight allows designers to pack more information into tight editorial spaces without overwhelming the reader. It is widely recognized for its use in classic branding and continues to be a favorite in both digital and print media for its authentic, timeless quality.
