Aster Regular

Aster Regular was originally designed in 1958 by Francesco Simoncini for the Simoncini foundry in Bologna, Italy. It was specifically engineered as a newspaper face, crafted to maintain high legibility even under the demanding conditions of high-speed printing and low-quality newsprint. The typeface features a notably high x-height, short ascenders and descenders, and sturdy serifs, all of which contribute to its exceptional readability in small point sizes.

In the decades since its release, Aster has become a classic choice for editorial design and book typography. Its design philosophy balances the elegance of traditional Italian serifs with the functional requirements of modern publishing. It is often compared to Century Schoolbook but offers a more refined, contemporary aesthetic that makes it suitable for everything from academic journals to sophisticated corporate identity projects.
