Bastarda Medium

Bastarda Medium finds its roots in the 14th-century European script known as 'Lettre Bâtarde,' a hybrid calligraphic style that emerged to bridge the gap between formal Textura and the rapid cursives used for administrative manuscripts. This digital interpretation honors the Burgundian tradition, capturing the transition from the rigid, vertical strokes of the Gothic era to a more fluid, vernacular expression that became the hallmark of early French printing and vernacular literature.

Technical analysis reveals a font characterized by a robust visual weight and surprisingly high legibility for a Blackletter derivative. The Medium weight maintains a strong color on the page without succumbing to the ink-clogged counters often found in heavier Fraktur weights. Its letterforms feature a notable x-height and distinctive 'f' and 's' strokes that descend below the baseline, creating a rhythmic verticality. The terminals are sharp yet controlled, while the slight curvature in the bowls provides a subtle organic quality that softens the inherent aggression of traditional Gothic scripts.
