Berkeley Oldstyle Regular

Berkeley Oldstyle Regular was originally created by the prolific American type designer Frederic W. Goudy in 1938. Initially commissioned as a private typeface for the University of California Press under the name 'University of California Old Style,' it was intended to convey a sense of academic tradition and timeless elegance. The design is deeply rooted in the Italian Renaissance models, featuring calligraphic warmth and distinctive, slightly eccentric character shapes that are hallmark traits of Goudy's work.

In 1983, Tony Stan adapted and expanded the family for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC), which is when it became known as ITC Berkeley Oldstyle. This version modernized the proportions for better performance in phototypesetting and digital environments while retaining the unique features such as the diamond-shaped dots (tittles) and the graceful, bracketed serifs. Today, it is celebrated as one of the most readable and sophisticated serif faces available for high-end book and editorial typography.
