Cardinal Regular

Cardinal Regular was designed by Jean-Baptiste Levée of Production Type, drawing significant influence from the rich history of French typography and the late 19th-century transitional serifs. The typeface is a refined homage to the classical structures found in Deberny & Peignot specimens, meticulously re-engineered for the digital era. It serves as a bridge between the rigid formalities of modernism and the organic flow of traditional Dutch and French calligraphic roots, resulting in a face that feels both archival and contemporary.

Expert analysis of Cardinal Regular reveals a disciplined x-height that is optimized for superior legibility in dense editorial environments. The letterforms feature a subtle diagonal stress and sharp, bracketed serifs that contribute to a steady rhythmic pace in line-setting. Its contrast is moderate yet intentional, ensuring that fine details do not break down at smaller point sizes, while the generous apertures and balanced counter-forms prevent ink-clogging and maintain a high level of clarity for long-form reading.
