Charter ITC TT Italic

Designed by Matthew Carter in 1987 for Bitstream, Charter was originally conceived as a typeface that could withstand the technical limitations of 300 dpi laser printers. By simplifying the letterforms and reducing the number of control points, Carter created a font that maintained exceptional clarity under duress. This ITC version preserves the robust architecture of the original while refining the curves for high-resolution digital environments, making it a cornerstone of functional typography for both print and screen.

The italic weight of Charter ITC exhibits a sophisticated, rhythmic slope that departs from mere obliqueness. Its letterforms feature a generous x-height and sturdy serifs that provide a strong horizontal flow, ensuring legibility even in dense academic or technical passages. The contrast is moderate, preventing the 'dazzle' effect common in high-contrast serifs, while the open counters and slightly condensed proportions allow for efficient word counts without sacrificing the graceful, humanistic aesthetic of the italic design.
