Charter ITC TT Regular

Charter was originally designed by Matthew Carter in 1987 for Bitstream, specifically engineered to overcome the limitations of the 300 dpi laser printers prevalent at the time. Drawing inspiration from the 18th-century French characters of Pierre-Simon Fournier, Carter simplified the traditional serif structures to ensure they remained crisp and legible despite the technical constraints of early digital typesetting. The ITC version continues this legacy, offering a refined interpretation of these sturdy, transitional forms for modern high-resolution environments.

The letterforms of Charter ITC TT Regular are defined by a generous x-height and robust, slightly squared serifs that facilitate a strong horizontal flow, making it ideal for immersive reading. Unlike more delicate old-style faces, Charter avoids thin hairlines that might degrade at small sizes, utilizing an economy of strokes that balances neoclassical elegance with industrial durability. Its visual weight is remarkably consistent, providing a sophisticated texture that maintains clarity across both low-density newsprint and high-resolution digital displays.
