CM Regular, widely known as Computer Modern, is the iconic typeface family created by Donald Knuth for the TeX typesetting system. Developed in the late 1970s using the METAFONT system, it was designed to provide a high-quality, scientifically accurate font for academic publishing. The design is a 'Modern' serif, drawing heavy inspiration from Monotype Modern 8A and Scotch Roman styles, featuring high contrast between thick and thin strokes and vertical stress.

Throughout the years, CM Regular has remained the de facto standard for mathematical and technical typography. Its legacy is tied to the rise of LaTeX, where it serves as the default face for millions of scientific papers, textbooks, and dissertations. Because it was built with mathematical precision, it excels in legibility for complex symbols and equations, making it a cornerstone of digital typesetting history.
