Forma Regular was originally developed in 1968 by the Nebiolo Foundry’s Research Group, led by the iconic Italian designer Aldo Novarese. It was designed as a sophisticated, neo-grotesque alternative to the dominant Swiss styles of the time, such as Helvetica. Unlike its more rigid contemporaries, Forma was celebrated for its subtle tapers and humanistic warmth, making it a standout choice in mid-century typography.
The modern digital revival, known as Forma DJR, was revived by David Jonathan Ross and Roger Black to restore the font's original elegance for contemporary editorial use. It preserves the tight spacing and distinct optical sizing that made the metal type so effective in high-end magazine layouts and corporate identities, providing a clean yet soulful aesthetic for modern digital and print environments.
