Frutiger 55 Roman was designed by the legendary Swiss typeface designer Adrian Frutiger. Originally commissioned in 1968 for the directional sign system of the new Charles de Gaulle Airport at Roissy, France, the typeface was intended to be easily legible from various angles and distances. Unlike the popular Helvetica, which was based on the Grotesque style, Frutiger created a humanist sans-serif that focused on clarity and openness.

The font was released commercially by Linotype in 1976 and has since become one of the most widely used typefaces in the world. Its balanced proportions, distinct letterforms, and high legibility make it a favorite for wayfinding systems, corporate branding, and editorial design. The '55' in its name follows the Frutiger numbering system, denoting a standard weight and width that serves as the foundation for the entire font family.
