ITC Kabel was designed by Victor Caruso in 1975 for the International Typeface Corporation. It is a modernized re-interpretation of the original Kabel typeface, which was originally created by the legendary German designer Rudolf Koch in 1927. Caruso's version features a significantly larger x-height, shorter ascenders and descenders, and a more uniform weight distribution across the family, making it better suited for the high-impact advertising and phototypesetting standards of the late 20th century.
The Medium weight of ITC Kabel is characterized by its distinct geometric shapes and idiosyncratic terminals, reflecting a unique blend of Art Deco elegance and German Expressionist roots. Notable features include the slanted crossbar on the lowercase 'e' and the diamond-shaped tittles on the 'i' and 'j'. These playful yet structured elements make ITC Kabel Medium a versatile choice for designers who want to evoke a sense of retro-modernism while maintaining high legibility in display settings.
