Martina Plantijn Black Italic

Martina Plantijn Black Italic is a masterful contemporary interpretation of the classic Plantin typeface, which traces its lineage back to the 16th-century work of Robert Granjon. Designed by Kris Sowersby of the Klim Type Foundry, this typeface was born from extensive research at the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp. It retains the sturdy, compact proportions and high x-height that made the original Plantin a staple for printers, but refines the details for high-resolution modern displays and sophisticated print production.

The Black Italic weight specifically represents the extreme end of the family's spectrum, offering a powerful, rhythmic slant with dramatic contrast. Its heavy strokes and sharp terminals create a sense of elegance and authority, making it an exceptional choice for expressive typography. Unlike standard revivals, Martina Plantijn avoids being a mere historical copy, instead focusing on the aesthetic and functional requirements of 21st-century editorial design and luxury branding.
