Martina Plantijn Bold Italic

Martina Plantijn Bold Italic is a sophisticated contemporary serif typeface designed by Kris Sowersby of the Klim Type Foundry. It is a modern revival based on the historical "Gros Canon" and "Ascendonica" types cut by Robert Granjon for the Plantin press in the 16th century. Named after Martina Plantin, who successfully managed the Plantin-Moretus printing office after her father's death, the typeface honors the legacy of one of Europe's most influential printing dynasties while providing a sharp, clear aesthetic for digital and print media.

The Bold Italic weight captures the rhythmic, calligraphic energy of Granjon’s original work, combining robust construction with elegant flourishes. It was specifically engineered to overcome the limitations of the 1913 Monotype Plantin version, offering better weight distribution and refined details. This font is widely considered a staple for high-end editorial work, offering a timeless sense of authority and scholarly grace that works across various optical sizes.
