Meta Bold Roman (part of the FF Meta family) was designed by the acclaimed German typographer Erik Spiekermann and released in 1991. Originally developed for the West German Post Office (Bundespost) as a highly legible face for small print on forms and stamps, the client ultimately rejected the design. Spiekermann subsequently released it through his own foundry, FontFont, where it quickly became one of the most influential typefaces of the digital era.

Often referred to as the 'Helvetica of the 90s,' Meta Bold Roman is a quintessential humanist sans-serif. It was designed to provide a warmer, more readable alternative to the sterile neo-grotesque faces popular at the time. Its distinctive features, such as the slightly curved stems and open apertures, ensure that the Bold weight remains exceptionally clear even in low-resolution environments or dense print layouts.
