Metro Regular

Metro Regular is a classic geometric sans-serif typeface designed by the influential American calligrapher and book designer William Addison Dwiggins in 1929. Originally created for the Mergenthaler Linotype Company, it was intended to compete with the rising popularity of European geometric fonts like Futura and Kabel. Unlike its strictly geometric counterparts, Metro incorporates a distinct humanist touch, offering better legibility and a more organic feel that reflects Dwiggins' background in traditional lettering.

Throughout the mid-20th century, the font underwent several iterations, most notably the Metro No. 2 series, which adjusted several characters to follow more conventional typographic shapes. However, the original Regular weight remains celebrated for its Art Deco elegance and its unique place in American typographic history. It bridges the gap between the rigid modernism of the early 20th century and the functional clarity required for high-volume editorial printing.
