Sabon was designed by the renowned typographer Jan Tschichold in the mid-1960s. It was a unique joint project between the Linotype, Monotype, and Stempel foundries, intended to be a typeface that would look identical whether set by hand, on a Linotype machine, or on a Monotype caster. The design is heavily based on the historical types of Claude Garamond, specifically a specimen printed by Konrad Berner, making it a premier example of an Old Style serif.

The Monotype Sabon Bold variant provides a robust and authoritative weight while preserving the graceful proportions and exceptional legibility of the original Roman design. It is widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated Garamond revivals ever created, making it a staple for high-end book typography, academic publishing, and prestigious corporate identities that seek to convey a sense of history, tradition, and timeless elegance.
