Monotype Sabon Regular

Monotype Sabon Regular was designed by the legendary typographer Jan Tschichold in the mid-1960s. It was the result of a unique commission by a committee of German printers who sought a typeface that would produce identical results across three different casting technologies: hand composition, Monotype, and Linotype. Tschichold turned to the work of the 16th-century engraver Claude Garamond for inspiration, specifically a specimen from the Egenolff-Berner foundry, to create a face that epitomizes the elegance of the French Renaissance.

The design of Sabon is characterized by its smooth, organic curves and balanced proportions, making it one of the most readable serif fonts in existence. It is classified as an Old Style or Garalde typeface, known for its understated beauty and lack of eccentricities. Because of its clarity and rhythmic flow, it has become a standard choice for book typography, academic publishing, and sophisticated branding projects that require a sense of timeless tradition.
