Neue Plak Black

Neue Plak Black is a contemporary and extensive revival of the original Plak typeface, which was designed by the legendary Paul Renner in 1928. While Renner is widely celebrated for his creation of Futura, Plak was his unique exploration into the realm of wood-type aesthetics, characterized by its varying widths and robust, grotesque letterforms. The Black weight serves as a powerful display variant, offering a dense, authoritative presence that bridges the gap between historical German engineering and modern digital needs.

The modern Neue Plak family was meticulously expanded by Monotype designers Linda Hintz and Toshi Omagari to include a massive range of weights and widths. This specific Black variant provides a heavy, high-contrast visual weight that is ideal for designers seeking a sophisticated alternative to standard bold sans-serifs. By maintaining the quirky, distinctive traits of the original wood-cut blocks while refining the kerning and proportions for digital screens, it has become a staple for high-end branding and editorial design.
