Neue Plak Extended Extra Black

Neue Plak Extended Extra Black is a sophisticated revival and massive expansion of the original Plak typeface designed by Paul Renner in 1928. While Renner is best known for the geometric perfection of Futura, Plak was his contribution to the world of condensed wood type, originally intended for posters. In 2018, Monotype designers Linda Hintz and Toshi Omagari meticulously digitized and expanded the family into 60 distinct weights, creating a versatile system that bridges the gap between early 20th-century German modernism and contemporary digital needs.

The Extended Extra Black variant represents the maximum horizontal footprint and heaviest stroke weight in the entire family. It features a strikingly large x-height and open counters that maintain legibility even at its most extreme density. This specific weight is a favorite among designers for brutalist web design, high-impact editorial layouts, and bold brand identities that require a sense of permanence and unyielding strength.
