Optima DemiBold

Optima DemiBold is a distinctively elegant typeface designed by the legendary Hermann Zapf between 1952 and 1955 for the D. Stempel AG foundry. It is widely classified as a humanist sans-serif, though it is often referred to as a 'serifless roman' due to its flared terminals and varied stroke weights that mimic the proportions of classical Roman monumental capitals. The design was famously inspired by sketches Zapf made on a 1000-lire note while visiting the Santa Croce church in Florence, capturing the beauty of ancient carved inscriptions.

The DemiBold weight offers a more robust and commanding presence compared to the standard Roman weight, providing the necessary contrast for hierarchical typography. It retains the signature grace and legibility of the Optima family while delivering enough visual weight for impactful headlines and sophisticated branding. Because it bridges the gap between serif elegance and sans-serif modernism, it remains a favorite for high-end editorial work and corporate identities that require a timeless, prestigious aesthetic.
