Papyrus Normal

Papyrus Normal was designed by Chris Costello in 1982, who was a 23-year-old junior illustrator at the time. He spent six months hand-drawing the characters with a calligraphy pen on textured paper, aiming to create a typeface that looked like something written on ancient Egyptian papyrus. The font was eventually sold to Letraset and released in 1983, featuring distinctive rough edges, irregular curves, and high horizontal strokes that evoke a sense of antiquity and hand-crafted artistry.

Over the years, Papyrus became immensely popular and was eventually included as a standard system font for both Microsoft Windows and macOS. While it has become a subject of pop-culture humor due to its ubiquity—most famously featured in the branding for James Cameron's Avatar—it remains a staple for projects requiring a rustic, historical, or organic aesthetic. Its legacy as one of the most recognizable decorative fonts in digital typography is firmly established.
