Söhne Schmal Extrafett Italic

Söhne Schmal Extrafett Italic is a refined sans-serif typeface designed by Kris Sowersby of the Klim Type Foundry. Released in 2019, Söhne represents the 'memory' of Akzidenz-Grotesk, specifically capturing the spirit of the New York City Subway signs designed by Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda. The Schmal (condensed) and Extrafett (extra bold) weight variant provides a high-density, high-impact aesthetic that combines the rationality of Swiss design with a contemporary, high-contrast slant.

This specific iteration, the Extrafett Italic, is engineered for expressive headlines and space-efficient layouts where a powerful, authoritative voice is required. The italicized form adds a sense of urgency and dynamic motion to the rigid, condensed structure of the font. It is highly regarded in the design community for its meticulous craftsmanship, offering a modern alternative to classic grotesques while maintaining superior legibility in tightly packed vertical environments.
