Syntax-UltraBlack Ultra Black

Syntax-UltraBlack is the most powerful weight in the Syntax font family, a masterwork of humanist sans-serif typography designed by the Swiss master Hans Eduard Meier. Originally conceived in the late 1960s and released by the Stempel foundry, Syntax was revolutionary for its departure from the rigid geometric and grotesque styles of the era. Meier based the letterforms on the organic, fluid structures of Renaissance-era serif faces, specifically the work of Claude Garamond, giving the font a unique calligraphic rhythm and exceptional legibility.

The Ultra Black variant was later expanded to provide a high-impact solution for display and advertising. Despite its massive weight and heavy stroke contrast, it retains the characteristic open counters and dynamic flow of the original design. This weight is particularly effective at communicating authority and modernity while maintaining the warmth and human touch associated with traditional pen-based letterforms, making it a staple for sophisticated editorial and corporate identity systems.
