TeXGyreTermes Italic is a sophisticated serif typeface that serves as a core component of the TeX Gyre project. This project was initiated to provide the TeX community with high-quality, free-to-use fonts that are based on the standard 35 PostScript fonts. Specifically, TeX Gyre Termes is based on the Nimbus Roman No9 L family, which in turn shares its lineage with the iconic Times New Roman. The italic variant is meticulously crafted to maintain high legibility while offering the slanted, elegant aesthetic required for emphasis in formal typesetting.

Developed by Bogusław Jackowski and Janusz M. Nowacki, this font is highly regarded for its extensive character set, which includes support for a wide range of Latin-based languages, diacritics, and specialized mathematical symbols. Because it is released under the GUST Font License, it is an essential resource for academic publishing, scientific documentation, and professional book design where a reliable, open-source alternative to proprietary serif fonts is required.
