American Typewriter Regular

American Typewriter was designed in 1974 by Joel Kaden and Tony Stan for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC). Created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the invention of the typewriter, this typeface adapts the rigid, monospaced aesthetic of manual machines into a modern, proportionally spaced design. By softening the industrial edges into rounded serifs, the designers created a font that maintains a nostalgic mechanical feel while providing the legibility required for high-quality professional printing.

The font achieved legendary status through its use in Milton Glaser’s iconic 'I Love NY' logo, which cemented its place in pop culture. Unlike traditional typewriter fonts, American Typewriter features a large x-height and distinctive ball terminals, making it versatile for both body text and bold display use. It remains a popular choice today for brands and designers who want to evoke a sense of history, authenticity, and friendly approachability in their visual communication.
