City Medium Regular is a geometric slab serif typeface designed by the renowned German typographer Georg Trump in 1930 for the Berthold type foundry. Characterized by its rigid, square-shaped structure and industrial aesthetic, it was inspired by the burgeoning machine age and the modernist movement of the early 20th century. Its distinctive rectangular counters and heavy, slab-like serifs give it a powerful, blocky presence that commands attention in both print and digital environments.
Historically, the City typeface family gained global recognition when a modified version was utilized for the iconic IBM logo, designed by Paul Rand. This association cemented the font's reputation as a symbol of corporate strength and technological innovation. Today, City Medium Regular remains a popular choice for designers seeking a font that balances vintage modernism with a clean, architectural feel, making it exceptionally effective for branding, large-scale signage, and editorial headlines.
