Cochin Regular was originally designed in 1912 by Georges Peignot for the renowned Paris foundry G. Peignot & Fils. The typeface was named after Nicolas Cochin, a prominent 18th-century French engraver and designer. Unlike many other serif fonts of its time, Cochin was not based on traditional calligraphic strokes but was instead modeled after the copperplate engravings that were popular in the French court, giving it a unique, sharp, and sophisticated aesthetic.
Characterized by its unusually small x-height and long ascenders, Cochin exudes an air of elegance and classical refinement. It became highly popular during the early 20th century and was later digitized and refined by Matthew Carter for Linotype. Its distinct look makes it a favorite for designers seeking a balance between historical authenticity and modern high-end editorial flair.
