Gotham Bold Regular was originally commissioned by GQ magazine and designed by the American type designer Tobias Frere-Jones in 2000. The font was inspired by the architectural signage and basic lettering found throughout New York City in the mid-20th century. It specifically draws from the vernacular signage seen on the Port Authority Bus Terminal, aiming to provide a voice that is both honest and authoritative while remaining distinctly modern.

The typeface gained global recognition during the 2008 Barack Obama presidential campaign, where its clean, geometric lines became synonymous with a message of change and hope. Today, Gotham is a staple in the design world, favored by major brands like Netflix and Spotify. The Bold weight is particularly valued for its balance of high visibility and sophisticated geometry, making it one of the most successful sans-serifs of the 21st century.
