The typeface was deeply inspired by the vernacular architectural signage found throughout New York City, particularly the lettering seen on building entrances and porticos from the mid-20th century. The font gained worldwide recognition and cultural significance during the 2008 Barack Obama presidential campaign, where its clean, geometric lines became synonymous with a message of hope and modernity.
