Gotham Ultra Italic

Gotham Ultra Italic is a heavyweight, slanted variant of the iconic Gotham typeface family, originally commissioned by GQ magazine and released in 2000 by Hoefler & Co. The design draws its inspiration from the architectural signage and vernacular lettering found on mid-century buildings throughout New York City, particularly the Port Authority Bus Terminal. This specific weight embodies a bold, geometric aesthetic that combines an honest, muscular structure with the dynamic energy of an italic slant.

Over the years, the Gotham family has become one of the most celebrated typefaces of the modern era, famously utilized in high-profile political campaigns and global corporate identities. The Ultra Italic style is specifically engineered for display use, providing a high-impact visual presence that demands attention. It maintains the clean lines and open counters of the lighter weights while adding the necessary mass and velocity for contemporary graphic design and high-visibility advertising.
