Highway Gothic Expanded Regular

Highway Gothic, officially known as the FHWA Series fonts, was developed by the United States Federal Highway Administration in the 1940s to solve the critical problem of high-speed legibility. Originally designed for road signage, the 'Expanded' variant, or Series F, represents the widest and most legible iteration of the system. It was engineered to remain recognizable even under extreme conditions, such as nighttime glare or heavy precipitation, establishing a standard for wayfinding that has been adopted globally from the Americas to parts of Asia.

Technical analysis of the Expanded Regular letterforms reveals an exceptionally large x-height and wide, open counters that prevent optical 'clogging' at a distance. The strokes are strictly monolinear, providing a balanced visual weight that maintains structural integrity across various viewing angles. Its generous horizontal proportions and intentional letter-spacing are designed to reduce the irradiation effect caused by retroreflective materials, ensuring that each glyph silhouette remains distinct and instantly decodable for the human eye during rapid motion.
