Highway Gothic Regular

Highway Gothic, officially known as the FHWA Series fonts, was developed by the United States Federal Highway Administration in the late 1940s. Its primary objective was to ensure maximum legibility for drivers traveling at high speeds under varying weather conditions. While it was initially standardized for road signage across North America, its utilitarian aesthetic eventually transitioned into the digital realm, becoming a hallmark of industrial and navigational design worldwide due to its clarity and public domain origins.

Technically, Highway Gothic Regular is characterized by its generous x-height and open apertures, which are specifically engineered to combat the effects of irradiation—the visual blurring caused by bright light reflecting off retroreflective surfaces at night. The letterforms lack unnecessary ornamentation, favoring a humanist-industrial hybrid structure that maintains distinct character recognition even at extreme distances. Its stroke weights are meticulously balanced to ensure that even with heavy halation, the internal counters remain clear and the character remains identifiable.
