ITC Franklin Gothic Std MedCd Regular is a sophisticated expansion of the original Franklin Gothic family, which was initially designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1902. In 1979, the International Typeface Corporation (ITC) commissioned Victor Caruso to create a modernized and more comprehensive series of weights. This Medium Condensed version preserves the sturdy, industrial character of the original while optimizing space, making it a favorite among editorial designers for decades.
This typeface is celebrated for its high legibility and its distinctive Grotesque personality, featuring the iconic double-story 'a' and 'g'. The Medium Condensed weight is particularly effective for creating hierarchy in complex layouts without sacrificing the authoritative tone that Franklin Gothic is known for. It remains a cornerstone of American typography, frequently seen in major news publications and corporate identity systems worldwide.
