Sentinel Regular

Sentinel Regular was designed by Hoefler & Co. (specifically Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones) to resolve the historical shortcomings of the Slab Serif, or Clarendon, genre. While traditional Clarendons were sturdy and attractive, they often lacked a comprehensive range of weights and italics, making them difficult to use for complex typographic hierarchies. Sentinel was engineered as a complete family that scales from Light to Black, providing a versatile solution for designers who need the personality of a slab serif with the functionality of a modern workhorse typeface.

Released in 2009, the font has since become a favorite for editorial design and corporate branding. It strikes a perfect balance between 19th-century charm and 21st-century precision. Its clear apertures and consistent stroke weights ensure that it remains highly legible in body text, while its distinctive serifs and character shapes allow it to command attention in large-scale display applications.
